Responsibility

Reporting to the Regional Operations Manager, the field service technician position will be responsible for installing/upgrading voice and data telecommunications network equipment.  The prime role is to work in Central Office (CO), Mobile Switching Office (MSO), Outside Plant (OSP), or Cell Sites providing technical expertise in Installation, Commissioning and Integration, Modification and Removal of telecom equipment to Customer Specifications.

Position Levels: The High Level Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Inventory, Staging, Deployment to Site.
  • Understanding of Drawings and Specifications
  • Construction Knowledge (ex. Bracing, Drilling, Superstructure, Measuring/Marking)
  • Rack and Stack, Installation of shelf equipment, routers, channel banks, alarm and fuse panels, etc.
  • Cabling and lacing, crimping and lugging, basic cable routing skills.
  • Basic high and low density fiber optical systems installation, Copper and RF Transport equipment.
  • Secondary Power Distribution equipment and fusing assignments.
  • Basic continuity, test and troubleshooting skills for equipment and turn-up
  • Configuration, Troubleshooting, Data Routing/switching components.
  • Solid computer and organizational skills, Microsoft Office software and technology skills.
  • Test and Turn-Up, i.e. SOW, TTU, and Close Out.
  • Customer NOC and TAC Interface skills set and Language capable.

Education/ Skill Requirement:

  • Central Office, OSP, CEV, and RT Cabinets, various telecom experience a MUST.
  • Experience with and thorough understanding of telecom installation practices.
  • Required Minimum Experience – 2 years in the field and central office installation.
  • Ability to lift/carry loads up to approximately 75 lbs. and climb necessary ladders.
  • Calix and/or Adtran Certifications a Plus *
  • Working knowledge of access networks product portfolio or similar telecom equipment/technologies.
  • Experience working with telecommunications networks, including FTTP, xDSL, IP, voice, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of Ethernet, IP, FTTx, ATM, xDSL, T1/T3 or GR-303

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Telecommunications Technician I is the entry-level in the Telecommunications Technician series. Incumbents at this level perform:

  • Expected to know color code and how to count cable pairs and has a basic understanding of fiber and fiber networks.
  • The ability to perform less complex analog and digital telephone equipment installation activities, cable installation and maintenance, under the close supervision of an experienced technician.
  • As experience and knowledge is gained, incumbents are expected to progress to more complex assignments and require less supervision. Incumbents assist journey-level technicians and learn to install, modify and repair telecommunications network systems and equipment.
  • Expected to complete CTL Cert.
  • Basic knowledge and functions of Brady Labeler

Telecommunications Technician II is the full working level in the Telecommunications Technician series and requires:

  • Journey level proficiency in the full range of activities (including interpreting drawings and completing systems installations, modifications, maintenance, and repair).
  • Duties include using a wide range of voice, data, and video communications technologies including interpreting specifications and interconnection requirements of new equipment
  • Expected to complete CTL Cert.
  • Proficient with Brady Labeler

Telecommunications Technician III is the advanced level in the Telecommunications Technician series.

  • Incumbents at this level independently perform the most difficult and complex installations of
    • both software and hardware
    • maintenance
    • diagnoses,
    • repair of a variety of electronic equipment in one or more of the following areas:
      •  fiber or other network equipment
      • Programming, repair, and maintenance.
      • Primary and Secondary power
      •  CWDM insertion
      • Test and Turn UP
    • The Telecommunications Technician III is distinguished from the Installation/Regional Field Operations Manager responsible for telecommunications in that the latter has management responsibility over planning, acquisition, deployment, operation, and support of specific technologies within the Telephone Systems division.
    • Expected to complete CTL Cert.
    • Expert with Brady Labeler

Telecommunications Technician IV/Project Supervisor is the advanced level in the Telecommunications Technician series.

  • Incumbents at this level are considered the Project Leaders for a specific Regional Field Operation Manager/Customer Contract.
  • Not only is expected to independently perform, but also advise, train, and oversee the most difficult and complex installations of both software and hardware, maintenance, diagnoses, and repair of a variety of electronic equipment in one or more of the afore mentioned area under the Tech III Level.
  • The Telecommunications Site Team Leader is distinguished from the Installation/Project Manager responsible for telecommunications in that the latter has management responsibility over planning, acquisition, deployment, operation, and support of specific technologies within the Telephone Systems Division.
  • Expected to obtain CTL Cert.
  • Display knowledge and ability in all LEVELS I, II, III.
  • Primary Roll of this position is to keep the Market Wide Project moving forward by having and managing the right skill sets in the right positions at all times, and take direction and guidance from the Regional Field Operations Manager, while still preforming level III duties.

Travel: There will be extensive (Approximately 80% to 100%) travel required and working hours are dictated by the customer Maintenance requirements, Phoenix project/program schedules, and regional demands. Background in some of the following technologies:
